SUMMARY:The Path of Dying: Common Illness Trajectories and What's to Come
DESCRIPTION:An online event for members of EoLDUK only\n\n\nCaring for someone with a serious illness—and working to ease their suffering—can feel uncertain at times. While no one can predict the exact timeline of an illness\, understanding the common patterns and stages can help you prepare for what may lie ahead. \nIn this continuing professional development offering\, Certified Hospice and Palliative Care RN Erin Collins will share the four common trajectories of decline and associated conditions. You will learn what to expect along these trajectories and how best to prepareahead of time\, as well as how best to support someone along the way. \nErin is a Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Nurse with 17 years of nursing experience in hospice and adult and pediatric oncology. Trained as an End-of-Life Doula\, her heart’s work is in end-of-life care. Erin is a member of the Board of Directors for the Oregon Hospice and Palliative Care Association\, an appointed member to the Oregon Health Authority’s Palliative Care and Quality of Life Advisory Council and the former Vice-Chair of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization’s End-of-Life Doula Advisory Council. Erin is a Cambia Health Foundation Sojourns Scholar and a recipient of the Cuniff-Dixon/Hastings Center for Bioethics Award winner for excellence in Palliative Care Nursing. \nShe co-founded The Peaceful Presence Project after seeing that many patients came to hospice afraid of death and largely unprepared for it. She is committed to educating the community at all levels\, including individuals\, families\, students and clinicians in preparing for and talking about serious and terminal illness with compassion and tenderness. She empowers families to be present with their loved ones in the final stage of life\, however long that may be\, and believes that by talking about and planning for death with our loved ones\, we can ease much of the suffering that arises at the end of life.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Grief Tending in Community
DESCRIPTION:An online event for members for End of Life Doula UK\n\n\nA Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Workshop for End of Life Doulas \nGrief touches every part of life – yet in our modern culture\, it’s often faced alone\, or maybe with a therapist\, or not spoken of at all. This online CPD workshop offers an introduction to grief tending in community: an approach that honours grief as a shared\, transformative and healing process rooted in ancestral and contemporary traditions. \nThrough a blend of presentation\, discussion\, and gentle experiential practice\, we will: \n· Explore the history and lineage of grief tending in community \n· Develop understanding of the many faces of grief — not only personal loss and bereavement\, but also the grief we/our clients carry for the world\, the planet\, our communities\, and parts of ourselves. \n· Discover ways to hold grief collectively and safely for yourself and others \n· Deepen our grief literacy and confidence in meeting grief — for ourselves and those we support \nThis session offers an opportunity to experience a taste of communal grief tending in a safe\, supportive container\, while deepening your understanding of how to integrate this work into your personal and professional life. \nWhether you’re seeking to expand your capacity to accompany others in grief\, or to become more comfortable with your own relationship to grief\, this heart-led workshop offers a nourishing opportunity to grow in confidence\, compassion and connection\, recognising grief as a natural and vital part of our shared humanity.

SUMMARY:Understanding Delirium for EoL Doulas
DESCRIPTION:An event for members of End of Life Doula UK\n\n\nJoin us for a focused CPD session exploring delirium led by palliative care consultant physician Dr Joseph Sawyer. We’ll look at how to recognise and respond to delirium at different points of the disease trajectory as well as understanding its causes\, potential treatments\, and supportive measures. This session is designed specifically for end of life doulas and will include space for questions\, discussion\, and reflection on real-world case studies. \nJoe is a palliative care consultant at St Elizabeth Hospice\, Ipswich. He has a passion for developing the fields of public health palliative care\, compassionate communities\, and social approaches to death\, dying and loss. He completed his undergraduate medical training at Imperial College London before holding the position of academic clinical fellow in palliative medicine at University College London. In 2020 he was awarded an Alzheimer’s Society Clinical Training Fellowship to research the role of compassionate communities for people affected by dementia. This led to his PhD which was awarded in 2024. Joe’s ongoing research focusses on integrative models of care that build links between statutory and non-statutory services whilst building community capacity to provide better care and support towards the end of life. \nThere are a limited number of subsidised places available\, please email operations@eol-doula.uk to request a place.

SUMMARY:Doulas and Social Workers-How We Work Together
DESCRIPTION:An online event for member of EoLDUK only\n\n\nEnd of life doulas often find themselves alongside a wide range of professionals when supporting someone who is dying\, including social workers. This session explores how end of life doulas can confidently and appropriately position themselves within larger multi-disciplinary teams\, and how to build constructive\, collaborative relationships that benefit clients. \nLed by a registered social worker\, the session will unpack the role of social workers\, the contexts in which they operate\, and the points at which doulas and social workers may overlap or diverge in their approaches. We will look at the complex situations in which you are most likely to work alongside social workers and consider what each profession brings to the broader network of support. \nThrough a mix of small-group and whole-group discussion\, presentation\, and a scenario-based exercise\, we will reflect on the realities of multi-disciplinary working and how to navigate the system surrounding those we support. \nWhether you are newly trained or have years of experience\, this workshop offers a fresh perspective on collaboration\, clarity of role and the collective effort required to improve outcomes for people at end of life and those important to them.
